The Lord gave me revelation this month that was deeply convicting. It revolved around the sacrifices of Cain and Abel. The Bible says in Hebrews 11:4 (NKJV): “By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain…”

As I pondered this section of Scripture, I began to wonder why God accepted the sacrifice of Abel but rejected his older brother Cain. According to the Bible, God favored Abel because he 1) offered a sacrifice made with faith. 2) Abel’s offering was also a quality offering. The Bible tells us Abel brought the "firstborn of his flock," which was considered his best. Abel’s offerings demonstrated a greater commitment and obedience to the Lord.

As I studied out Abel’s offering, I began to ponder my own offerings to the Lord. How often do I text in church, get distracted during my devotional time, or zone out while praying? After self-examination, I concluded my offerings to the Lord are second best. This has encouraged me to remove the distractions during the times I am encountering the Heavenly Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit.

As we remove the distractions in our lives that prevent us from focusing on the Lord, our walk with God will deepen. The next time you go to church, read your Bible, or pray, try doing it in a distraction free zone.

When Life Throws a Curve Ball

In January, Dawn and I started packing to move. The owners of the ministry house where we have lived has decided to sell their property. Dawn and I had just spent the last year remodeling the guest house due to water damage. We had to repair floors, walls, and cabinets. It was our first remodel project, so we had to learn as we went. Having to move is an unexpected curve ball.

When life throws a curve ball, how should we react? There are several examples in the Scriptures of life throwing a curve ball at the Biblical characters. In Daniel 3:8-18, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego were doing their jobs and serving the Lord. A curve ball came and they found themselves facing a fiery furnace. However, they trusted God even to the point of death. 1) They did not waiver in their faith.

In Acts 16:16-25, Paul and Silas brought freedom to a slave girl who was possessed with a spirit of divination. This resulted in them being beaten with rods, thrown into prison, and fastened in stocks. Even with this curve ball thrown at them, 2) they prayed and sang hymns to God.

In Mark 5:16-20, Jesus delivered a man possessed with a legion of demons. The people in the region should have celebrated this great miracle. Instead, they demanded Jesus to leave the area. Jesus heeded their request and 3) He carried on even when he was rejected and mistreated.
